Bonanza

Bonanza was founded in 1877 as the Yankee Fork’s first mining community.
At it’s peak, Bonanza boasted over 600 residents, had a regular grid of streets, and had underground water mains for drinking water and fire protection.
Fires in 1889 & 1897 destroyed much of the town. This and the increased activity in nearby Custer caused many of the remaining residents to relocate.

We visited Bonanza during the 2007 Ghost Town Rally.
All that remains today are a couple of standing homes, several collapsed homes, and a few sheds and outhouses.
This building has an attached ice house with 2 foot thick sawdust-filled insulated walls.  Ice cut off the river in the winter was stored here for use throughout the summer.

Most of Bonanza is on private property. Fortunately for us, the owner of the land happened to be there during the time of our visit. He allowed us to look around and take photos while telling us a bit about the town.
He told us his Father and Mother honeymooned in the cabin pictured at right when it was still standing!

A garage and log cabin sit on the west end of town. The cast iron stove outside the cabin is covered with intricate cast designs.

An outhouse: Please, please don’t tell me that the scrap of cloth hanging on the wall was used for what I think it was.....

Bonanza receives an official “Cat seal of approval” for a ghost town.
