Custer

A Ghost Town Rally 2007 visit to the town of Custer.  Custer was founded in 1876 and named after the General Custer Mine. It was somewhat of a sister town to nearby Bonanza. When the mills closed in 1910, Custer became a ghost town.
Today, the forest service and many volunteers are gradually restoring Custer into an interpretive historic site.

The old Empire Saloon is now a store and gift shop that raises money to help with the restoration.
The old schoolhouse is now a museum.

Gathered around the Saloon is in interesting collection of mining equipment from around the area.

With several buildings stabilized and restored, we’re sure this place will have more and more of interest to see as time goes on.

The gigantic ore bin is all that remains of the mill site. This ore bin is approximately 70 feet square. In old photos, it is completely dwarfed by the mill building that stood next to it, covering almost the entire bare area in foreground of this photo.

The small cemetery above town has a handful of graves.  Many of the people interred died from snow slides.

This gentleman however, seems to have met a different end!
