Practical Gun Ownership

Okay...so you’re 40 miles from the nearest paved road and stumble across a meth lab or perhaps a band of hostile Mexican Nationals tending a 20 acre pot farm?  What do you do?  If your first instinct is to dial 911 on your cellular phone....well, you just might be a dufus city slicker!  First...your phone probably won’t have service, and in the wilderness, NOTHING conveys respect like a big old hog-leg worn in a conspicuous holster at your hip. Any questions??
Seriously though folks, outback travel means you WILL probably eventually find a meth lab or a pot farm, or a Charles Manson Wannabe.  You can be wary and fleet of foot, or you can pack some insurance. Almost all of the off road explorers I hang around with have guns. You’d never know it, because none of us want to advertise it, but occasionally we like to target shoot too. In these cases, it becomes a matter of simple fun coupled with the peace of mind knowing that we can drive off a maurading bear or a small army if we have to.  The 2nd ammendment is still on the books!

Oh my GOD! Kids with guns!!!

The older girls like to shoot targets too. They all have gun safety down pat. They are comfortable shooting semiautomatic weapons or just BB guns for the competition. As a kid growing up, my father had a virtual forest of rifles in his closet.  There were no trigger locks and no need for them...we knew we’d get our asses tanned if we so much as LOOKED at that part of the closet.  But if we had to, any one of us could have picked up those guns and used them if we had to.   We knew how.

If this appalls you, tough shit! The way we crazy gun nuts indoctrinate our youth is to start them out with some very STERN lessons about gun safety.  Here, my young nephew shoots a BB gun that could probably almost dent an aluminum can.  I had this little guy in tears at one point when he forgot to lock his safety and I told him he couldn’t shoot anymore today.  He broke the rules!   After a bit of letting him stew about it, I let him shoot a few more rounds. The little guy was a total trouper after that. He could probably teach gun safety at 5 years old at this point...his uncle has drilled it into him!

My oldest daugher Alisha is a great shot..a real competitive shooter.  I love to show this picture to her potential boyfriends...don’t mess with her! The full size version of this photo is really cool..I accidentally captured the muzzle flash and the vapor trail of the bullet in taking this shot.

During this shooting session in a hidden oasis in Southern California, I got tired of loading clips for the kid and taught her to load her own.  She started off with the
10-22 rifle but decided she like the Ruger Mark 1 much better.  500 rounds later, she finally got tired!

“Dad...the pistol is much more fun than that rifle!!!!”

Kids who know how to operate guns and respect their power are 1000 times more responsible and safe than kids who find Dad’s “hidden” gun in his sock drawer and do something stupid with it.   Guns are just machines, no more powerful than a pneumatic nail gun.  It’s called PARENTING...it’s called RESPONSIBILITY. More people outta try it!
